Day out in Amsterdam: 10 things to see and do

The center of Amsterdam is not that big, so you can see a lot of Amsterdam in just one day. Discover all the sights you shouldn’t miss, even if you’re only going out for a day in Amsterdam. To have an idea of the things you must have done and seen in Amsterdam, we have put together a must do and see list.

Day out in Amsterdam

1. Explore Amsterdam’s canals on foot

Amsterdam is known for its many canals, but if you only have a day in Amsterdam, there are 3 most famous and important canals that you should definitely not miss: Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. These canals were dug during the Golden Age. The canals are surrounded by the most traditional Dutch canal houses that Amsterdam is known for.

2. Taking a canal cruise

If I could only choose 1 thing to do in Amsterdam, it would definitely be a canal cruise. Whether you’re in Amsterdam for a day or a week, don’t miss this. Cruising on Amsterdam’s canals will save you a lot of walking, but most importantly, you will see the city from a totally different perspective.

When we talk about boating in Amsterdam, there are a lot of options. With Bootuitjes, you can easily rent a boat. A tip from us if you travel in peak season is that it’s best to book a boat outing a little earlier. That way you avoid a lot of disappointment.

3. Floating Flower Market

Even if you don’t plan to buy flowers, Amsterdam’s floating flower market is a must-see. You can buy flowers, bulbs, souvenirs, or you can just take a look. To stay there for a long time is not necessary, but it is nice to have seen it.

4. Visit the well-known red light district

One of the things Amsterdam is known for is the Red Light District. The coffee shops and window prostitution make the Red Light District a unique place.

Red light district can be visited during the day, but if you want to see the real side of Red Light district it is better to visit it in the evening.

5. Visit the Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is one of the largest museums in Amsterdam. The museum was built in 1876 to the design of noted architect P.J.H. Cuypers. The museum features collections of world-famous works such as The Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn. In addition to all the beautiful paintings, the Rijksmuseum maintains a collection of Delftware, sculptures and other important works of art.

Because there is so much to see in the Rijksmuseum keep in mind that you will spend at least half a day there.

6. Cycle through the center

One of the most enjoyable things to do on a beautiful sunny day is to enjoy biking along Amsterdam’s beautiful canals. The old buildings, the biking and the friendly crowds make it so much fun. Moreover, by bike you get everywhere so you also pass the nicest places and so you also discover nice eateries and pubs.

7. Visit the Heineken brewery

A popular activity is to visit the oldest Heineken brewery, now converted into an interactive museum.

The tour begins with a brief introduction. After the introduction, you can watch rest at your own pace. To get the Heineken Experience along, a number of interactive games have been devised. At the end of the tour, of course, you get to sample a free Heineken (or soda if you don’t drink alcohol).

Because the Heineken brewery is a popular attraction, it is important to book on time to avoid disappointment.

8. Visit Dam Square, the Damrak and the Royal Palace Amsterdam

One of the places not to be missed in Amsterdam is the Damrak. The Damrak is home to many souvenir stores, hotels and fast food restaurants. The Beurs van Berlage, the Stock Exchange and De Bijenkorf can also be found on the Damrak.

Dam Square with the royal palace is one of the most famous locations in Amsterdam. Many events take place here, and it is always very lively. You don’t need much time to visit De Dam, but it would be strange not to pass it when visiting Amsterdam.

9. The Jordaan

The Jordaan is located in the center of Amsterdam and is very conveniently located. It is one of Amsterdam’s most famous neighborhoods.

If you feel like eating there are very nice restaurants near the Jordaan. There are also nice stores, cafes and a houseboat museum. Plenty to see, then.

10. Visit the Anne Frank house

Anne Frank is one of Amsterdam’s most famous former residents. During World War II, she spent more than 2 years in hiding in the house with her family. The house has now been converted into a museum.

The rooms on display in Anne Frank’s house still reflect the atmosphere of hiding. On display are documents, photographs, film footage and original items belonging to the people in hiding to illustrate the events of the time. Best of all, the original well-known diary of Anne Frank is on display.
