Is it warm on board?
All the saloon boats are heated. Blankets are provided on the sloops and saloon boats, so you can snuggle up under one whilst the lights glide by. It is, after all, a winter’s evening on the water: make sure you wear warm clothes so you can enjoy the whole trip.
Will we see all the artworks at the Light Festival?
You’ll see most of the artworks along the route, and from the best vantage point: the water. Many of the works hang above the canals or float on them, and are specifically designed to be viewed from a boat. No crowds on the quay, just a front-row seat. Want to enjoy it for longer? Then book an extra hour’s cruise.
Do we need to buy an Amsterdam Light Festival ticket ourselves?
No. The festival ticket for the boat trip is included in the price of the boat. You just hop on board; we’ll take care of the rest.
Where does the striptease take place?
The striptease doesn’t take place on the boat, but in a bar. You’ll first spend an hour and a half cruising along the canals, after which the skipper will drop you off at the bar where the show begins. That way, you get the best of both worlds: a leisurely cruise to start with, followed by a show with plenty of space. CHECK: are drinks at the bar included?
When is the best time to go on a Light Festival boat tour?
It’s quietest on the water on weekdays and in the early evening. In December, we recommend booking well in advance — the weekends around the festive season fill up quickly.
Is the boat heated in winter?
Absolutely! Our saloon boats have a heated cabin. If you opt for an open sloop, warm blankets will be waiting for you.
How long does a Light Festival boat tour last?
Most boat trips last between 1.5 and 2 hours — just long enough to complete the entire route. Would you prefer a longer trip or dinner on board? Anything is possible.
Can I also follow the route on foot?
Yes, certainly, some of the artworks can be seen from the quay. But the route has been designed with the water in mind: many of the works hang over the canal and really come into their own when viewed from a boat.
How much does a canal cruise cost during the Amsterdam Light Festival?
Boat tours start from €18.10 per person. You can hire a private boat with a skipper from €197.50 per hour (open sloop) or €225 per hour (salon boat). Please feel free to request a free, no-obligation quote.
Do I need tickets for the Amsterdam Light Festival?
No, viewing the light art installations is free — both from the quay and from the water. You only pay for your boat tour or private boat.
