Sailing in Amsterdam: The Perfect Outing for Every Occasion

No need to follow the crowds to see everything the city has to offer. Step aboard a boat with friends, family or colleagues and experience the city while you relax with food and drinks. Sail through the city centre and admire the historic architecture the city is famous for. Cruise past NEMO, Artis and the Maritime Museum, or head off on an adventure to Amsterdam North to discover more modern architectural styles. Moor at one of the many terraces that will serve you on board, or open a delivery app and pick a restaurant along your route — select ‘pick up’ instead of ‘delivery’ and you’ll have a delicious meal on board in no time.

Sailing in Amsterdam: A Few Simple Rules

Because the canals belong to everyone, the City of Amsterdam has some rules in place for taking to the water. For example, boats without a permit may not carry more than 12 people on board, and enforcement against nuisance from the water has been tightened. Of course, this doesn’t have to dampen the fun at all. In fact, these rules are precisely what ensures that everyone can continue to enjoy the Amsterdam waterways for a long time to come.

Discover the City on Amsterdam’s Most Beautiful Routes

Sail through the UNESCO World Heritage site that is the Amsterdam canal ring, where old and new architecture meet in a magical way. Whichever route you choose, make sure to bring a guide who can tell you everything about the city. Even if you have visited Amsterdam a hundred times before, an experienced skipper can show you new and surprising sides of the city.

Important! Want to sail a route that also covers the IJ, the Kostverlorenvaart or the Nieuwe Herengracht? Then get in touch with an experienced boat hire company, as it is not always permitted to sail these routes.

Below we share our three favourite routes, but Amsterdam has many more beautiful sailing routes for you to explore.

The Architecture Route

Sail past 23 modern architectural highlights on the Architecture Route. It may not be the Amsterdam you typically picture, but that is exactly what makes this route so surprising. Discover what makes Amsterdam North and the NDSM Wharf so special, and admire the extraordinary architecture along the IJ.

The Red Light District Route

De Wallen and Amsterdam are inseparable — it is perhaps one of the most famous neighbourhoods in the city. But this popular tourist attraction is far more than just the Red Light District. On this route, discover the history of the city combined with the origins of this area’s controversial reputation. The Oude Kerk, Hotel De L’Éurope and the Rembrandt House are just some of the highlights you will encounter on this sailing loop through Amsterdam.

The Plantage Route

See Amsterdam from its green side and go on an urban safari past Artis, NEMO and the Tropenmuseum. This route through the eastern part of the city, alongside the above-mentioned highlights, also takes you through part of the city centre and along the Amstel river.

Hire a Boat in Amsterdam

To sail these beautiful routes in Amsterdam, you will of course need a boat. Fortunately, we can help you with that. At bootuitjes.nl, hiring a sloop or salon boat is simple. For a smaller group, you can hire a sloop from €150 per hour; a salon boat is ideal for larger groups and can be hired from €190 per hour.
