1. Explore the Canals of Amsterdam on Foot

Amsterdam is famous for its many canals. If you only have a day in the city, there are three main and most famous canals you must not miss: Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht. These canals were dug during the Golden Age. The canals are surrounded by the most traditional Dutch canal houses that Amsterdam is known for.

2. Take a Canal Cruise

If I could choose only one thing to do in Amsterdam, it would definitely be a canal cruise. Whether you’re in Amsterdam for a day or a week, don’t miss this. Cruising the Amsterdam canals saves you a lot of walking, but most importantly, it allows you to see the city from a completely different perspective.

When it comes to cruising in Amsterdam, there are plenty of options. You can easily rent a boat from Bootuitjes. A tip from us: if you are traveling during the high season, it’s best to book a boat trip early to avoid disappointment.

3. Floating Flower Market

Even if you’re not planning to buy flowers, the floating flower market in Amsterdam is a must-see. You can buy flowers, bulbs, and souvenirs, but you can also just take a look. You don’t need to stay long, but it’s fun to have seen it.

4. Visit the Famous Red Light District

One of the things Amsterdam is known for is the Red Light District. The coffee shops and window prostitution make the Red Light District a unique place.

The Red Light District can be visited during the day, but if you want to see its real side, it’s better to visit it in the evening.

5. Visit the Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is one of the largest museums in Amsterdam. The museum was built in 1876, designed by the renowned architect P.J.H. Cuypers. The museum houses collections of world-famous works such as Rembrandt van Rijn’s “The Night Watch.” Besides all the beautiful paintings, the Rijksmuseum has a collection of Delftware, sculptures, and other important artworks.

Since there is so much to see at the Rijksmuseum, plan to spend at least half a day there.

6. Cycle Through the City Center

One of the most enjoyable things to do on a sunny day is to cycle along the beautiful Amsterdam canals. The old buildings, the cycling, and the lively atmosphere make it so fun. Plus, with a bike, you can get everywhere, including the nicest spots and discover great eateries and pubs.

7. Visit the Heineken Brewery

A popular activity is to visit the oldest Heineken brewery, which has now been converted into an interactive museum.

The tour starts with a brief introduction. After the introduction, you can explore the rest at your own pace. There are several interactive games designed to give you the Heineken Experience. At the end of the tour, you get to taste a free Heineken (or soft drink if you don’t drink alcohol).

Since the Heineken brewery is a popular attraction, it’s important to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

8. Visit Dam Square, Damrak, and the Royal Palace Amsterdam

One of the places not to miss in Amsterdam is Damrak. Damrak has many souvenir shops, hotels, and fast-food restaurants. You will also find the Beurs van Berlage, the Stock Exchange, and De Bijenkorf on Damrak.

Dam Square with the Royal Palace is one of the most famous locations in Amsterdam. Many events take place here, and it’s always very lively. You don’t need much time to visit Dam Square, but it would be strange not to pass by when visiting Amsterdam.

9. The Jordaan

The Jordaan is located in the center of Amsterdam and is very conveniently situated. It is one of the most famous neighborhoods in Amsterdam.

If you want to eat, there are very nice restaurants in the Jordaan. There are also nice shops, cafes, and a houseboat museum. Plenty to see.

10. Visit the Anne Frank House

Anne Frank is one of the most famous former residents of Amsterdam. During World War II, she hid in the house with her family for over two years. The house has now been converted into a museum.

The rooms in Anne Frank’s house still convey the atmosphere of hiding. There are documents, photos, film footage, and original items of the hiders on display to illustrate the events of that time. Best of all, you can see the original well-known diary of Anne Frank.
