The Canal Route: Amsterdam, a City with a Rich History

Everyone knows Amsterdam’s waterways. You’re no doubt aware of the city’s rich history — but what makes Amsterdam so special when seen from the water?

The city has a storied trading history and received its name and city rights as far back as the 13th century. Amsterdam has carried its current name since then, and most of its major transformations have taken place since. By the 17th century, the city had truly begun to flourish, reaching a population of around 200,000.

To accommodate this growth, the canal ring was constructed — and it’s still a source of joy today. Since 2010, the canal ring has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, cementing its status as part of our shared cultural heritage. At the time of writing, the city has a population of approximately 870,000.

A quick snapshot of history. As you sail through the canals, you can see and feel the beautiful harmony between old and new. Let our experienced skippers take your thoughts for a wander — they know not only how to sail, but how to bring the city’s stories to life.

The Red Light District Route:

Sailing through Amsterdam’s canals, you’ll inevitably pass through De Wallen — the Red Light District. Who hasn’t heard of Amsterdam’s historic Red Light District? It’s a place everyone should experience at least once. De Wallen refers to a network of streets in the oldest part of the city, generally understood to cover the area between the Warmoesstraat and the Zeedijk.

However, the red light area covers only the eastern part of De Wallen — there’s so much more to see. Well worth a visit is the Oude Kerk, right in the heart of De Wallen. If you’re a history enthusiast and want to be amazed by the rich heritage of Amsterdam’s historic city center, this is the route for you.

Important: Sail this route clockwise due to one-way water traffic on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. No need to worry — our skippers know these waters better than anyone.

The Berlage Route

H.P. Berlage was a highly skilled architect who designed many remarkable buildings. He created the urban development plan for this part of the city, and the route that bears his name is a truly special one, packed with highlights.

During a visit to the United States in 1911, Berlage was deeply impressed by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. This is the primary reason that Berlage’s designs always carry a certain American influence — right through to his very last project. So along this route, you’re not just seeing Berlage’s work — you’re also seeing the inspiration he drew from Frank Lloyd Wright.
